Hazards & weather
No two runs are the same: every run scatters fresh cover, crates and explosive barrels over each area, and the weather can turn. Use all of it against the horde.
A new layout every run
When a game starts, every area gets extra cover (crates, barrels and rocks), crates you can shoot apart, explosive barrels and, on most maps, toxic puddles, in places that never block the way through. Enemy packs also sleep in different spots each run.
Crates and explosive barrels
| Breakable | Health (tier 1) | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Crate | 60 | Blocks movement and shots until you shoot it apart. About a third drop gold, some a health pack. |
| Explosive barrel | 25 | Explodes when shot: 110 fire damage to enemies (more on harder maps) and 28 to players in a 150 radius, sets off other barrels, and leaves the ground burning for 5 seconds. |
Explosions (grenades, rockets, mortar shells) break them too. Crates and barrels are tougher on harder maps.
Hazards
| Hazard | Damage per second to you (tier 1) | To enemies | Where |
|---|---|---|---|
| Toxic puddle | 6 | 12, and corrodes them (+25% damage taken) | Scattered each run on most maps |
| Burning ground | 10 | 20, and sets them alight | Where a barrel exploded, for a few seconds |
| Lava | 18 | 36 | The Ashlands |
Damage grows by a third for each map tier above the first. Sleeping enemies aren’t hurt (it would wake them), but once a pack is chasing you, lead it through. The Hazard Suit, Hazmat Filters and Fire Lining resist them.
Weather
Pick the weather on the briefing screen before you deploy, or leave it random (clear most of the time). Everyone in the game gets the same weather.
| Weather | Bonus XP and gold | What changes |
|---|---|---|
| Clear | – | Nothing: a normal run. |
| Night | +15% | You only see what your light reaches, and enemies notice you later. |
| Fog | +10% | Thick fog hides everything far away, for you and the enemy. |
| Rain | +5% | Shock hits 20% harder, and fire burns half as long. |
It never rains or fogs in the Ashlands. At night, explosions, burning ground, burning enemies, turrets, loot and lava all give off light.
